Book a Tee Time at MacDonald!Meet the StaffScorecard

This stately par 72 MacDonald Golf Course ranks among the most popular local courses. It has been voted one of the best public courses in the city by readers of the Wichita Eagle for many years. MacDonald first served as the original Wichita Country Club in the 1913. It measures 6,958 yards and features fairways lined with beautiful, mature cottonwood trees.

On May 23, 2020, the Steve Hatchett Youth Golf Campus' driving range opened to the public. Built by First Tee Greater Wichita, which was funded entirely by the private contributions of First Tee supporters and sponsors.

The Steve Hatchet Youth Golf Campus is the home of First Tee Greater Wichita Learning Center. The First Tee is charging forward to build a Learning Center and a Youth Golf Campus on the northwest edge of MacDonald Golf Course to stimulate growth in the sport by providing access to golf for our youth.

Improvements at MacDonald has been a focus for the golf division. Staff are utilizing a goose dog (since 2019) to thin the geese population and reduce the number of nests on site. By allowing Jack the Goose Dog to do his job there has been an elimination of goose fesses on the greens and other high traffic areas.

  • Sod was laid in the fairways to eliminate bare spots

  • The rough was over-seeded to define the fairways and give a more consistent turf

  • Staff reduced the height of the rough to be the same cut as at Tex Consolver and Arthur B. Sim

  • The third fairway was moved farther to the east to eliminate golfers teeing off hitting into the driving range area and to make the hole more playable

  • Some tee boxes were enlarged

  • New ladies’ tees were added on holes 3, 5, 14, 15, and 16. These additions shorten the holes to make these par 4’s more playable an enjoyable for the golfer

  • Collar (or fringe areas) were enlarged on 15 of the holes to increase playability around the greens

  • Blue tees were added on holes 2, 9, 10, and 18 to enhance the challenge for skilled golfers

Jack the Goose Dog

Wichita’s oldest golf course saw a decline in rounds for multiple years due to an over population of geese and geese feces. Wichita Park and Recreation stepped outside of the box and purchased a specially trained goose dog from Fly Away Geese in North Carolina. Jack the goose dog is now a permanent fixture of MacDonald golf course and a member of the park and rec staff. Jack’s efforts have been successful by thinning the geese population and reducing the number of nests on site. By allowing Jack to do his job there has been an elimination of goose fesses on the greens and other high traffic areas. Golfers have trickled back to the golf course and rounds have increased 82%.
